Directors Programme 2023/24

In 2023 we started a new training initiative by supporting four experienced industry professionals to access shadowing Director opportunities and assist them on their directing career. Each Director can access funding in partnership with a production for shadowing with additional off-the-job support through mentoring, festival attendance and short courses.

  • Jack Goessens

    Jack Goessens

    Jack was the Shadowing Director on Block 2 of the second series of The Rig, made by Wild Mercury Productions for Amazon Prime Video.

    Jack (he/they) is a Glasgow based writer/director and editor. Jack has been supported by some of the industry’s leading talent development programmes including Berlinale Talents 2023, Channel 4 RI:SE with DANC/Triple C 2022 and BAFTA x BFI Flare 2021. As an editor Jack has edited high-end drama such as Outlander and Netflix’s The Fuck it Bucket. He was previously nominated for a Scottish BAFTA for a film he edited called Groom and for the British Film Editors Chris Crookall Breakthrough Editor Award.

    As writer and director Jack is currently developing their first feature, Boifriend, and has received feature development funding for this through Short Circuit. It was presented at IFFR's CineMart 2023. His short film Everyman (2021) won multiple awards - most notably the RTS award for Short Form - and screened at over a dozen BAFTA and Oscar qualifying festivals around the world.

    His most recent film Who I Am Now (2022) was funded by Creative Scotland and LEAP and premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. Previously Jack won the Glasgow Short Film Festival Production Attic pitch 2018 with his film, Bouba & Kiki (2019).

  • Kal Singh Lally

    Kal Singh Lally

    Kal was the Shadowing Director on series 8 of Shetland, made by Silverprint Pictures/ITV Studios for BBC.

    Kaljeven is a Glasgow based Director. In 2021 he Shadowed on a block of River City and directed several scenes across both episodes. This led to him directing his first episode last year, and gave him his first broadcast credit as a Director too. Earlier in the year he returned to the show to direct his first block and will return in the coming months to direct another.

    Alongside this he recently shadowed the first block Director on Screw series 2 and then Shetland series 8. He stepped up to direct 2nd Unit on both shows, gaining valuable experience and opportunities in HETV.

    Prior to focusing on directing, he worked in post-production. He spent several years working his way from Trainee to Assistant Editor to Editor. As Editor he has worked on shows such as Outlander, Princess Mirror-Belle, The Wedding and River City.

  • Marilyn Edmond

    Marilyn Edmond (TBC, 2024)

    Marilyn began her career in 2010 as a Floor Runner and progressed to 2nd Assistant Director, where she has worked on a number or TV dramas and feature films including River City, Outlander, Benidorm, Death in Paradise, The Railway Man, The Angels' Share, Under the Skin, Sunshine on Leith and The Legend of Barney Thomson, to name a few.

    In 2015 Marilyn hung up her walkie talkie and became full-time mum, before returning in 2019 writing, producing and directing her first feature film, CONNECT.

    CONNECT had its world premiere in February 2019 at Glasgow Film Festival and had its International Premiere at Orlando Film Festival in October 2019. The film also screened at Sydney Indie Film Festival 2019 where Marilyn was awarded BEST DIRECTOR.

    ​​​In October 2019 CONNECT began a UK theatrical cinema tour, consisting of 15 Q&A screenings across the UK before being released on Amazon, iTunes, Virgin Media, Sky Store and Google Play.

    ​Marilyn has been shadowing at River City and has since directed two episodes. She will be returning to direct a block in the next series. She has also shadowed on the hit drama The Lazarus Project in Wales.

  • Holly Jack

    Holly Jack (TBC, 2024)

    Holly is an actor/director based just outside Glasgow. She has fourteen years experience working in the industry as an actor, on shows such as Waterloo Road, Burnistoun and playing long running, bad girl Nicole, on BBC Studios’ River City.

    Her first short film as a producer, All Up There, was nominated for the Young Film Makers Prize at GSFF and recently screened at the Houses of Parliament, as part of the endometriosis parliamentary campaign. Earlier this year, Holly completed her writer/director debut short film Safe Home, produced by Smashing Pictures.
